We love what we do.
Why? Because clean water is the most essential resource on our planet, and we get to produce and reclaim clean water every single day.
Prior to First Utility District being established in 1954, residents used wells, springs, or cisterns for their water source. The West Knoxville area was beginning to grow, and it needed a clean, safe, consistent water source.
Today, we are proud to be one of Tennessee’s largest water and wastewater utility districts, serving over almost 100,000 people in our district. Last year, we provided over 4 BILLION gallons of water to area residents and businesses, at one of the lowest rates in Tennessee.
Throughout the years, we have retained and practiced the same organizational goals and objectives:
- Provide our customers with quality water and reliable sewer services
- Maintain reasonable rates
- Render exceptional customer service
- Be an effective partner with community leaders for planned growth and development
First Utility District is a state-chartered entity functioning in Knox County and is run by three appointed commissioners that make up the Board. These three commissioners are appointed by the County Mayor and serve four-year terms. The Board of Commissioners meet at the office of First Utility District once a month. See when the next meeting is here.
As West Knoxville continues to grow, our team at First Utility District take pride in keeping pace with the growth through careful planning, sound management, and exceptional employees. Our finances are among the strongest in Tennessee. We have a AAA rating and finance the majority of our improvements with cash, which helps keep costs to our customers lower and rates stable. In 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 First Utility District was named a Top Workplace.
